Most guides to compression focus on the mix, where you can undo any decision with a click. But a lot of the character in classic recordings was baked in earlier — during tracking, before the signal was ever committed to tape or converter. For home recordists, understanding compression at the input stage is a different discipline, with its own tools, placements, and a genuine debate about whether you should do it at all.

What compression does, and why it shows up during tracking

A compressor reduces a signal's dynamic range by turning down the loudest parts, then uses makeup gain to bring the overall level back up. The core controls are threshold, ratio, attack, release, and makeup gain [1][2]. On guitar it "won't drastically change your tone" — it makes the instrument more responsive, lets notes ring out, and slightly increases sustain, an effect you "feel more than you hear" [3]. Vocals are naturally very dynamic; without compression, quiet words vanish and loud ones jump out, so compression helps a vocal sit consistently [1][2].

During tracking, that consistency can directly improve a performance. One engineer said compression while tracking "has had the single greatest impact on getting a good performance" [4]. It also prevents overloading the next stage in the chain [5]. And if you want the specific character of a particular hardware unit, tracking through it avoids an extra conversion process later [5].

The central debate: to commit or not

The catch is that recorded compression is irreversible: "If you kill the signal during tracking, it will take a near miracle to bring it back to life" [5]. That's why many engineers stay conservative. Dave Derr, who invented the Empirical Labs Distressor, says he "tend[s] to play things safe and save the extended functions... for mixdowns" [6]. Beginners are advised to be careful while still learning to get good sounds [5].

There's also a historical wrinkle. Tracking compression once existed partly to protect tape from peaks, but Sound On Sound notes that engineers working with high-headroom, 24-bit conversion "will be less concerned than analogue engineers about fitting their recordings into the dynamic range of the recording medium" [7]. In the digital home studio, tracking compression becomes more a creative choice than a necessity — which is why many engineers do a little on the way in and more in the mix, treating compression like "coats of paint" rather than one heavy layer [5]. Sensible tracking levels help too: aiming for peaks around -18 to -10 dBFS leaves headroom below the hard digital ceiling at 0 dBFS [8].

For vocals, compression is inserted between the mic preamp and the A/D converter rather than in front of an amp.
