Anthropic brought its Claude Cowork agent to web and mobile with cloud-by-default execution, and published usage data showing that more than 90% of sessions have nothing to do with software development.

The release

On July 7, 2026, Anthropic expanded Claude Cowork — its general-purpose "knowledge work" agent — from a desktop-only app to web, iOS, and Android, and moved sessions to run in the cloud by default [1][3]. Cowork is essentially the agentic muscle of Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent, repackaged for people "who would never open a terminal" [2]. You hand it a task and it works across files, calendar, email, messaging apps, the web, and other connected tools until the job is done [2].

The product has moved fast: it launched as a desktop app in January 2026, reached general availability in April with enterprise governance controls, and now adds web and mobile reach [2]. Beta access starts with Max subscribers (Max plans begin at $100/month), expanding to more plans "in the coming weeks," and Anthropic is dangling doubled usage limits through August 5 to encourage adoption [2][3][4].

What actually changed

The headline capability is cloud-by-default execution. Sessions now run remotely on Anthropic's servers, so a task keeps running even when your laptop is closed or no device is online — scheduled jobs run with nothing switched on at all [3][7]. Desktop still offers a local-processing option with local file and browser access, which Anthropic calls the "full experience" [3][4].

That shift unlocks cross-device handoff: start a task at your desk, answer Claude's clarifying questions from your phone, and pick up finished output anywhere, with push notifications when the agent needs input or has results ready [1][6]. Chat and Cowork are also unified into a single interface on web and desktop, with projects and artifacts carrying across both; Anthropic's pitch is that "delegating is now as easy as asking" [2][4].

Read plainly, this is a channel and reach expansion, not a capability upgrade — mobile gains portability but loses local file access [3][5].

The real headline: nobody's coding with it

Alongside the launch, Anthropic published a study of 1.2 million anonymized, aggregated Cowork sessions from more than 600,000 organizations, sampled May 11–31, 2026 [8][7]. The category breakdown upends the prevailing enterprise-AI narrative:

  • Business process & operations — 33.4% (reconciling spend, building onboarding checklists, consolidating scattered updates into reports)
  • Content creation & copywriting — 16.4% (drafts, slide decks, proposals)
  • Software development — just 8.7%
  • DevOps 7%, research 6.4%, data analysis 5.8%, document processing 4.1%, sales ops 4%, with remaining categories each under 4% [8][7]

More than 90% of sessions were unrelated to coding, and roughly half of all usage was business process plus content creation [7]. As VentureBeat put it, this "cuts against the dominant narrative in enterprise AI," which has fixated on coding assistants as the primary large-language-model use case [8]. Anthropic frames it as people using Cowork for "the work around the work" — assembling and structuring information so they can act on their expertise [7].

Why it matters for practitioners

Two practical shifts follow. First, agent adoption is broadening well beyond engineering. For a product born from a coding-agent lineage, sub-10% coding usage is a striking self-report, and the takeaway several outlets drew is blunt: ops, finance, and comms teams should start budgeting "agent seats" the way engineering already does [10].

Second, cloud execution turns the agent into an asynchronous work queue rather than a desktop app tethered to an open laptop. Anthropic's own example: schedule a 6 a.m. client-prep run that reads email threads, transcripts, and news, builds a briefing doc, and leaves a follow-up email drafted-but-unsent for review over coffee [6][7]. Crucially, human-in-the-loop is preserved — the agent runs in the background but pauses to request input when a decision or permission is needed [6][4].

The competitive frame

Anthropic isn't alone. OpenAI is making the same move with Codex, which began as a developer tool but is increasingly used for reports, spreadsheets, presentations, and research [1]. OpenAI's June 2026 data reported Codex passing 5 million weekly active users, with knowledge workers around 20% of users and growing more than three times as fast as developers [11][13]. Analysts now describe Codex as evolving into a desktop "work OS," which raises a governance question: office work lacks the guardrails — pull requests, tests, diffs — that make coding agents auditable, so pushing agents into non-developer workflows may drive office work toward being more versioned and inspected [14]. The same week saw "agent gateways" emerge as a control-plane layer between agents and the tools they touch — relevant as always-on agents multiply across departments [15].

Caveats

The 33.4% headline is directional, not settled: Anthropic sampled and categorized its own data, and unknowns include how many sessions completed cleanly and whether heavy users inflate the "business process" bucket [10]. The sample is also Max-tier-skewed, so the mix may not represent Anthropic's broader base [10]. Read together with OpenAI's numbers, though, the week's signal is clear — the coding-agent wars are spilling into the rest of the office, and non-engineering teams are the fastest-growing agent users [1].
